Ken’s path to Merchant’s Lane began far from Petaling Street’s vibrant alleys. A finance professional who studied in Australia and built a career at a hedge fund in Hong Kong, Ken embodied traditional definitions of success. But when an unexpected job loss disrupted his trajectory, he found himself at a crossroads, questioning what truly mattered.

Returning to Kuala Lumpur, Ken reconnected with his roots in Chinatown, where he’d spent much of his childhood. Amid the nostalgia, he saw potential in Petaling Street — a place with a rich history but fading relevance. In 2015, Ken discovered an abandoned brothel with peeling walls and echoes of a colourful past.

What followed was a leap of faith. The café was Ken’s way of giving the building a purpose while maintaining Chinatown’s historic identity.

Restoring Heritage: From Brothel to Community Space

With a 1900s building that had been abandoned for 5 years and located in a notorious location, Ken faced challenges including structural decay and high refurbishment costs. Having spent over RM300,000 just to refurbish the building, Ken faced scepticism from friends and family.

Yet, his determination never wavered. He envisioned a space that could blend the old, vintage charm with a contemporary vibe all while preserving the building’s intricate mouldings and including woodwork with modern touches.

Today, the café’s design speaks volumes about its purpose: blending old and new to honour Chinatown’s past while welcoming today’s community.

From the dishes to the décor, every detail tells a story. Ken’s culinary philosophy mirrors his vision for the café—celebrating Malaysia’s multicultural heritage with a modern twist. However, the journey hasn’t always been easy. A life-altering accident left Ken temporarily unable to taste or smell — an unimaginable hurdle for someone running a café.

Merchant’s Lane Café wasn’t just built on determination; it was forged through personal trials that tested Ken’s resolve. One of the most significant challenges came when Ken experienced a life-altering accident.

While working tirelessly to grow the café, Ken suffered a head injury that robbed him of his sense of taste and smell—two crucial senses for someone in the F&B industry. What once brought joy, like savouring a meal or sharing food with friends, became an isolating experience.

The accident affected more than just his work; it took a toll on his relationships. Friends drifted away, unable to relate to the challenges Ken faced. Only after a year after the accident, he began regaining his sense of taste and smell. It wasn’t an overnight recovery, but it was a spark of hope that reignited his passion for food and community.

Despite all of that, Ken continues to develop and curate delicious dishes at Merchant’s Lane, turning it into a beloved spot that people can’t resist coming back to.
